Versatile. That's the word that best describes this lens for me. I've been shooting with Velvet 56 for several years. After being introduced to this lens when I was taking a macro class, I was hooked.
This stand alone lens is on my camera almost all the time. I love that I can shoot landscape and macro with the same lens. I can shoot wide open at f/1.6, closed down at f/16, or anywhere in between. That's shooting with a lot of effect to virtually no effect, at all. The blur of this lens is what gets to me. Being able to tell a story about something using depth of field is amazing. I love being able to isolate a tiny detail in a flower, a rain drop, or the texture of my subject.
While I like to refer to this lens as a macro lens, it's really 1:2 not 1:1. To help create an added macro effect I use extension tubes. You can use extension tubes you already own or you can purchase extension rings from Lensbaby. This lens is also a great lens if you're interested in freelensing.
Lensbaby is currently selling this lens starting at $449.95 USD
